But this song gets a pass ;)
Dolly’s version of this gives me the chills, and Steve Young is an underrated songwriter.
dumpsterfire!

This song was one of my Mom's favorites many years ago and always makes me think of her when I hear it. Thank you.

One of my favorites.
BTW, couldn’t see the Blue Angels from here. The neighbors drove to where they could see them from afar. Oh well, at least it’s not like I missed the Thunderbirds or anything. ;)

I hadn’t heard Dolly’s version. Listening now. My first surprise was the higher key. She’s also singing her own harmonies. Mmmm, bluegrass. One of my favorite parts of bluegrass is the upright bass.

It looks like they flew right over DFW. I thought about driving up to see if I could see them from Founder’s Plaza. I imagine the site was pretty well packed.

I have a friend who vicariously is always hating on the Eagles, but also LOVES Lebowski— I hate to remind her that, in the opening bowling scene, there’s a delightful re-arranged Hotel California playing as the entry music.
The Eagles rocked. Frey rocked. Henley still does.

Yeah, they did, and not close enough to get a good look from East Dallas.

Sometimes it’s a delight to hear a “cover version” where the new artist takes the song in a completely different direction. This is one.

Just listened to the original Steve Young version. It’s got a bit of a Gordon Lightfoot vibe to it, certainly a product of its era . I must admit that I knew nothing about Young, and how influential he was. Now I’m getting ready to listen to Rock Salt & Nails.

I’d never heard that version either. Dolly usually just isn’t my speed, but that girl can sing. Somehow the bluegrass treatment works for SBR.

I’m not a big Dolly fan either, but you have to respect people who are just so damned good at what they do. I grew up watching Hee Haw on Saturday nights, not because I was a country music fan, but because it was the only thing on TV in the pre -cable days. Watching reruns now, I can appreciate just how fantastic those musicians were, especially the back up players who worked their asses off in the studio and rarely got recognition.

I grew up watching Hee Haw, too. M ostly because my parents love both kinds of music: Country AND Western. :) It didn’t take me too long to run to classic rock, but I do have to admit that the folks on that show had skills . Roy Clark? About as country as you could get, but MAN could he play - pretty much anything with strings.

Dude definitely had chops.
My father was a classical musician, and all we ever listened to at home or in the car was classical music. I, too, soon turned to classic rock and have never looked back, even though I make my living playing classical music.

And another guy who had extraordinary chops. I had the distinct pleasure of playing backing up for Campbell with the Austin Symphony a few years ago. It was pretty late in his life, but damn, he could still play like the wind.

There’s nothing like a hot bluegrass band, deeply fun music. We have a rule in the house: whenever that song comes on Pandora, we drop everything and crank it.

What I like about bluegrass is when it’s done properly and everybody circles around the same mic, and ba lance is done by moving closer or farther away from the mic. It seems almost like the purest form of community music. And then, you listen to traditional Irish music and you realize where bluegrass came from.

Exactly this, it’s truly community music . The local bluegrass and Irish sessions, on different nights, are the same guys. I’m fortunate that they’re often held at my father in law’s house. At least, they were until ‘Rona came around. As a drummer I absolutely love watching it, because a good stringband doesn’t need percussion.

I don’t hate-hate the Eagles, they’re just not my favorite . I do love Lebowski , the Dude has been my Halloween costume more than once. As a drummer, I respect the hell out of Henley’s ability to play and sing because that’s difficult as hell.

I play in a brass quintet (2 trumpets , horn, trombone, tuba), and our tuba player also plays bass guitar and upright bass in various country bands around town . Many classically trained tuba players start to drag after the first beat, but Kerry holds an absolutely rock solid beat throughout the whole piece. Doesn’t matter what the tempo is. I love it.

He’s one of those artists, like Dylan, whose music was perhaps best interpreted by others. Great stuff.

Sort of like Aaron Copland. Extraordinary composer, but rotten conductor. The recordings of his music that were conducted by Leonard Bernstein are some of the best ever.

Indeed, the driving bottom end and percussive bass is so key. There’s no swinging or playing behind the beat , it’s just GO, the faster the better . Add some ripping fingerpicking, flying fiddle and mando and you’ve got yourself a good night. I’ve played mostly jazz, funk, and rock so it’s a whole different world to take in and I love every minute. We have a professional violinist who lives here, a Frenchman, who tours the world . Hilarious guy, who you would not at all picture in an orchestral environment if you didn’t know that was his day job . But on the rare occasion when he’s home , after he goes surfing and smokes a bowl, he shows up in his old jeans and flannel, flirts with my wife, cracks a beer, and absolutely shreds the hell out of the little bluegrass sessions. It’s a joy to watch.

I am very much a music reader. I would love to be able to play from my head, but I’ve never learned how, or taken the time to learn. But to watch somebody who can just play is, as you say, a joy to behold.

A song about an overall unappealing part of Alabama, neat.
